Sophia Cheng | B.S. Psychology 2027
Minor: Health & Medical Sciences
Post-Graduation Plans: Masters of Public Health in Biostatistics
My schedule varies day-to-day, with some days focused on coursework, and other days dedicated to extracurriculars. On a coursework-focused day, I start my mornings at 9:30 AM with a class called BME HealthReach. In this class, I design and implement interactive activities to teach math and science to hospitalized children. After this class, I continue my day by doing homework in the library and eating lunch at the Student Center or Community Market. Some days, I also take a break to go bowling at Tech Rec (students bowl for free on Mondays!). In the afternoon, I attend two more classes: Programming for Brain/Behavior and Pathology.
On an extracurricular-focused day, I start my mornings at 10 AM with a research lab meeting. As a research assistant in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Aging Lab at Georgia Tech, I study age-related changes in spatial navigation skills by working with research participants and virtual reality. After my lab meeting, I make lunch in my apartment before attending an online lecture for Research Methods as a teaching assistant. For this course, I lead exam review sessions, host office hours, grade assignments, and answer students’ questions. Once my Research Methods lecture ends, I spend the rest of my afternoon volunteering for BME HealthReach or working with research participants.
In the evenings, I hang out with my friends or study on campus. My favorite study spot is the Blue Donkey coffee shop in the library!

Minors: Spanish and Science of Mental Health and Wellbeing
Post-Graduation Plans: Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology
Mondays are my busier days, so I try to get up by 9am. My first class of the day is Cognitive Psychology, and attention is my favorite topic we’ve covered so far. I either work on stuff for my research lab (I am currently a volunteer research assistant for a psychology lab at Agnes Scott) or do homework while I eat lunch in the J.S. Coon basement. I then head to Tech Square for Spanish Conversation I. I return to my apartment to hang out with my cat before I head back to campus for an evening of SMILE. I joined SMILE because I loved the idea of spreading positivity on campus. I host my committee meeting then head to the general body meeting followed by a leadership meeting. It all ends around 9pm when my friend and I go to my apartment for dinner.
Thursdays look a little different. I start my day on Zoom for Introduction to Clinical/Counseling Psychology, a new course offered this semester. It is super helpful as I plan on getting a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology. I head to work at Starbucks in the bookstore where it is busy with students getting coffee between classes. Once I get off work, I get on Zoom again for Social Psychology, the class I am a TA for this semester. I really enjoy being a TA, especially for Social Psychology because it’s one of my favorite classes I have taken. I then head to the Psychology Association meeting where I serve as president. I joined the Psych Association my freshman year and love the community. When the meeting ends, I do my reading for my Spanish literature class then head to bed after a long day!
